Austrian GP: Friday Recap
Quick Hit: Logan outqualified Alex (in Sprint Qualifying) and a Williams Academy driver snagged F3 pole.
Formula 1
Williams may have been firmly at the back of the grid for FP1 on Friday in Austria, but I think we’re all best served by looking past the initial hour of practice on Sprint weekends.
Q1 in Sprint Quali was incredibly tight, especially down around the knockout zone. Logan did a very nice job in pulling himself out of the bottom five with his final flying lap, ending up in P14. Alex finished a tenth and a half from safety and thus, we were all treated to the rarest sight in Formula 1 - Logan outqualifying his teammate.
We joke, but Logan genuinely did well to put that car in Q2 and the pace well and truly seems to have gone away from that car at the moment.
I’m not overly expectant of anything good happening for Williams in the Sprint tomorrow - they don’t look particularly strong and they probably won’t get close to any points, meaning any edgy driving incurs more risk than reward on the day.
But lo!
You may think it’s all slow cars and bad news for the team but I’m here to say fear not.
Formula 3
Luke Browning, a Williams Academy driver racing in Formula 3 stuck it on pole earlier in the day, to which we doff our caps.
Courage, Luke, and go well tomorrow.
Formula 2
A tale of two drives for the members of the Williams Academy in Formula 2 on Friday. Franco Colapinto delivered a creditable P4 and Zak O’Sullivan stuck it P12. Work to do for Zak to move up the field in the sprint and feature races but Franco is well-positioned to bring home solid points in both.
Right, that’s all for today. Back on it tomorrow for a little bit more quali and a little bit more racing.
